Dr. Marion Smith was born and raised on a small ranch in North Eastern Arizona.  He was one of nine children and when he reached college age he had to put himself through college as the family's budget was strained with two daughers in college.

He worked in the college dairy and cafeteria for his keep and expenses.   His interest and experience in dairy cattle from his childhood led him to participate in "The Dairy World of Tomorrow" at the Worlds Fair in New York City where the U of A dairy herd was on display.

While at the University of Arizona he met Dr. Pistor and was encouraged to consider a career in veterinary medicine.  In the fall of 1941 he entered the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A & M.  The war was on so the curriculum was changed to allow students to graduate in three years instead of four.  Upon graduation he entered the Army Veterinary Corps as a First Lieutenant and worked overseas with the war dog program.

After the war he began practice in the Salt River Valley and developed a large dairy practice.  He also had an interest in exotic animals and began working with Dr. Robert Maytag's back yard "zoo."  This led to involvement in the very early stages of developing the Phoenix Zoo and his interest in that endeavor continued throughout his practice life.  His long involvement with the zoo had made him uniquely qualified to tell the story of this fine zoo.
