More About The Book

The intent of this book is not only to show the beginnings of veterinary medicine in Arizona, but to show the roots of the Science and Art of Veterinary Medicine. This goes back to times when animals were first domesticated for man's use and changed life for the better all over the world. China and India were to have early influence as well as the countries of Europe.

The history of veterinary medicine in Arizona begins in 1887 with the arrival of the first recorded graduate veterinarian, Dr. A. J. Chandler. He is followed by Dr. J. C. Norton. It is doubtful if there is another state in the union that has had men of the veterinary profession leave such a benevolent stamp on its early years. Two outstanding professionals whose legacy we still see and utilize today.

Effort was made to show what it was like to live in the desert in those early years. Although many came to the desert for health reasons,it was not a land for the faint of heart. Both men and women had a toughness and tenacity to stick out the rough times and build a great state.

This book is a story of hardship, heroism in three wars, and success in building a thriving veterinary community. This is a heritage that benefits veterinarians, clients, and animals of today.
