A timeline of veterinary progress leads you from 1775 BC to 1887 AD, when the new Arizona Territory began. The early veterinarians in Arizona were not just practitioners of the art and science of veterinary medicine, but were entrepreneurs intent on building a state that would endure and prosper. In 1887, Arizona was a place ready for a growing livestock industry. Statehood came in 1912, and the rest of the country began to realize that Arizona was not just an empty desert, but also a place where dreams could become a reality and roots could be put down.
Where did the art and science of veterinary medicine come from? Who were the early veterinarians in Arizona? What did veterinarians do for medication before antibiotics? What diseases and ailments worried stockmen and horsemen in the late 1800's and early 1900's? What role did the university play in developing animal health procedures and educating future veterinarians? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this book.
Effort was made to include the names of any and all veterinarians that practiced in Arizona prior to 1963. Old newspapers were researched, family members of deceased veterinarians were interviewed, government offices associated with animal regulations were researched, and the files of the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association were extensively used. The archives of the American Veterinary Medical Association, in addition ot libraries and museums throughout the state, provided much needed information.
This book was written primarily for veterinarians and their families; however, anyone interested in animal care, the livestock industry, or Arizona's early history may also find it interesting.
